What these terms mean
- Medical-grade
- Formulas sold through clinics and authorized retailers rather than general retail. They use higher concentrations of tested active ingredients than drugstore equivalents. They are cosmetics, not prescription medicines — no prescription is required to buy them here.
- Actives
- The ingredients doing the measurable work in a formula — retinol, vitamin C, salicylic acid, niacinamide. Introduce one at a time so you can tell what your skin is responding to.
- Skin barrier
- The outermost layer of skin, which holds moisture in and irritants out. When it is disrupted, skin feels tight, stings on application, or flakes. Gentle cleansing and consistent moisturizing rebuild it.
- Non-comedogenic
- Formulated to avoid blocking pores. Useful shorthand if your skin is breakout-prone, though no formula can guarantee it for every person.
- Broad-spectrum SPF
- Sun protection that covers both UVB (burning) and UVA (ageing and pigmentation). Anything you use as a daily final morning step should say broad-spectrum.
- AM and PM
- Morning and evening. Some products suit either; sunscreen is morning only, and retinol is evening only because it makes skin more sun-sensitive.
- Post-procedure
- The recovery period after a clinical treatment such as a peel, laser or microneedling. Your treatment provider decides when each product may be reintroduced — follow their direction over any routine shown here.
